Erectile Dysfunction (ED) is the inability to achieve or maintain an erection sufficient for sexual intercourse.
According to the National Institutes of Health, men with ED are four times more likely to have a problem with their sex drive than men without ED.
However, a new study published in the New England Journal of Medicine in December has shown that Viagra works well for men with ED, but does not work well for men with other health problems.
“We have been studying the efficacy of Viagra for many years, and the results are encouraging,” said Dr. Edward D. Rosen of the Cleveland Clinic, director of the Cleveland Clinic’s Sexual Medicine Center.
“With so many people now experiencing ED, we think it’s important to have a comprehensive approach to help men overcome this and other health challenges.”
Dr. Rosen is the only urologist in the world to work with men with ED. The New England Journal of Medicine published a review in November that concluded that Viagra is the best solution for men who have trouble achieving or maintaining an erection during sex.
According to the study, men who take Viagra have an 84% higher chance of having a satisfying sexual experience than men who do not take Viagra.
Rosen and his colleagues reported that Viagra works by increasing blood flow to the penis and helps men get and keep an erection.
“This is a real breakthrough for men’s health, and a big step forward in treating ED,” said Rosen. “There are more men than ever who are struggling with ED.”
The study was funded by Pfizer Inc. and has been published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

Rosen, M. P., Rosen, T. C., and colleagues analyzed data from more than 600,000 men who took Viagra, or sildenafil citrate, in conjunction with other medications for erectile dysfunction (ED). These men were compared with 4,500 men who were not taking any other ED medications.
Results showed that men who took Viagra (an oral phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitor) were more likely to have ED (73%) than those who did not take sildenafil citrate. The researchers also found that Viagra users were more likely to report having sexual difficulties in addition to erectile dysfunction, compared to non-users.
Rosen, T. C., and colleagues then evaluated these groups’ differences in erectile function and other health-related outcomes. Results showed that men who took Viagra were more likely to have erectile dysfunction (48%) than those who did not take the medication (37%, p<0.001).
Other results showed that the percentage of men with ED who reported having sex with men (including erectile dysfunction and urinary symptoms) was also higher in those taking Viagra. This suggests that the combination of ED and sexual difficulties may be contributing to this condition.
Rosen noted that his findings should be used as a baseline for prescribing, and that the results could potentially provide further information about Viagra’s effectiveness for men with ED and other health conditions.
Rosen noted that he was interested in developing a product that could work for men with ED. He stated that a product called Viagra should be a good candidate for FDA approval. Rosen noted that he is interested in developing a product for men with ED.
